Shambles (more commonly known as 'The Shambles') is a well-preserved medieval street in the centre of the city of York, UK. Still cobbled and showcasing buildings from the 14th century, the street is a fully functional shopping street with independent shops trading and lots of fantastic cafes and snack bars. The historic street used to contain the city's meat trade and butchers shops, taking its name from the medieval word for a meat bench. Each butchers shop on the street would of originally had a meat bench out on to the side of the street for selling the meat, there are still a few examples of shops with these original meat benches intact being used as the window ledges.

A stroll down the Shambles is a must when in York. The shops are well-priced considering the idyllic location and the street is really beautiful and quite untouched considering just how old it is, alterations and modifications have been done naturally and only as needed over the years rather than this street becoming a mock-up or just another tourist attraction - this is still a real medieval street.
